Wednesdays with the Walk-Ons Ep. 6 - Remember Me
10/12/20-This song is my rendition of “Remember Me” by Fawn Wood (Cree/Salish), Randy Wood (Cree), and R. Carlos Nakai (Navajo/Ute). It’s a round dance song, sometimes also known as a 49er song. This sort of music, with the first verse of vocables and the second verse of lyrics in English, become popular in the 1960s and beyond. These powwow songs originate stylistically in the Great Plains, but they have come to unite many different Native people, forming a Pan-Indian, intertribal identity. “Remember Me” in particular has become well known lately as a song to remember our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit relatives. This issue plagues all of Indian Country and yet received little national attention or outcry. Through music like this, we can connect with one another, mourn, and remember. While I am singing alone here, these songs are usually sung by men in different octaves or with men on lower parts and women on upper octaves, all in unison. It creates a unique power in our music that cannot be communicated by myself alone, especially as I do not have a drum of my own. That said, the coronavirus has canceled powwows all across Indian Country, so it makes me happy to be able to share a bit of powwow and a bit of my culture with all of you. Wela’lioq - thank you all. Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Jake Gerardi ('24)
